Vars
and its villages are situated on the thresold of the Parc National des
Ecrins and of the Parc Régional du Queyras. Vars even have its own natural
preserved area, the Val d'Escreins, a wonderful valley that is now part
of the Queyras Park.
Vars
is a perfect base to embark on scenic journeys to the Queyras and Ubaye
Valleys, to Briançon, to Montdauphin (18th century citadel)... Summer
activities are plentiful: paragliding, mountain hiking, mountain biking,
cycling, rafting (15km away) ... or sun bathing.

Vars Sainte-Marie is
an authentic village that nevertheless has all the advantages of a large
ski-resort featuring modern lifts and well groomed runs.
In the village: two ski rental shops, a newsagents, a supermarket, the
tourist office, the town-hall and church, a post office, other hotels,
restaurants and chalets and still a few farms.
Situated 1.5 km (1 mile)
from the hotel is Vars-les-claux: a large modern ski resort with an ice-skating
ring, a cinema, nightclubs, shopping centres and ski schools. Sainte-Catherine
and Saint-Marcellin are two more traditionnal hamlets close by (a free
shuttle bus links all of the villages).

Alps (page 343).
